Damaris Martinez Sanchez first studied photography in 1992 after completing two years of Art History studies at the University of Havana; the photo-reporter course/workshop was facilitated by the UPEC, the Spanish acronym for Cuban Journalists' Association. Her first camera was a Soviet made Zenit 11.
She then went on to study Film, TV and Cinematography at the Higher Institute of Arts (also in Havana) while working as a Producer at the International School of Film and Television of San Antonio de los BaƱos until she emigrated to Canada in 2003.
Once settled in Calgary, Alberta, Damaris has continued her work as a photographer not only personally, but also commercially and as a volunteer. She has worked for several organizations like NUTV (University of Calgary), Calgary International Film Festival, Cirque du Soleil, Global Festival, etc.
